The Nick Eden FAQ

Genuinely people do ask me these things. I doubt that anyone really cares about the answers, but who knows.

Who is this guy?

Did you mean to spell your domain name like that?

What's 'Read Pheasant Throughout'?

When's the next issue coming out?

Why don't you have any Children?

Where did you get the wallpaper?

Two and a Half cats?

What did you use to put these pages together?

A picture of Nick in his natural environment. Something to frighten the children eh?Who is this guy?

My name is Nick Eden, but you guessed that. I live in York, which is in England. I'm getting relentlessly closer to thirty. I program computers for General Accident Life Assurance. Anyone wanting an experienced MS Access programmer/developer in the York/Leeds area should email me. CV avilable on request.

I have a house in York, currently full of lodgers, but not for much longer. I have two and a half cats. I'm still reading comics and playing roleplaying games at my age. I'm forced to admit that I'm a slob, but I hope a good natured one.

Did you mean to spell your domain name like that?

My email address is nick@pheasnt.demon.co.uk. I wanted to be called 'pheasant', which would be a connection to my fanzine, Read Pheasant Throughout, but Pheasant was already gone. As were the next names I thought up, seconds ticking away on a work phone. In the end I started knocking letters out and found that 'Pheasnt' was available. I'm pretty sure that some of my email winds up with whoever 'Pheasant' belongs to, and should you be reading this, good sir or madam, I appologise for gumming up your mail box.

What's 'Read Pheasant Throughout'?

Read Pheasant Throughout is a fanzine I produced. It covered roleplaying games, particularly RuneQuest and comics, and general fantasy/sf stuff I was interested in. It went down quite well in some parts. I am planning on doing another issue. Honest.

When's the next issue coming out?

It's been far too long since that second issue came out. About two and a half years now. I am planning a next issue. Really. I don't know when it'll happen though - most of what I wrote before things went horribly wrong are by now a bit out of date. Would anyone really want to read an article talking about thisinteresting comic called 'Bone' that no-one's heard of? It would have been relevant two and half years ago. Now it's not.

Why hasn't it come out yet? Three reasons. None of them entirely satisfactory:

While none of the above are very good excuses they all happened pretty much together and none of them helped.

Some people are probably bitter about the way I neversent them the issue/issues they paid for. I don't think I actually cashed any cheques. If you're sure that I did, or you gave me cash, email me and I'll sort something out. I expect I'll be giving the next issue away if I ever get it out.

Why don't you have any Children?

I'm single, and terrible at talking to strange women. Especially those ones who I don't know, believe to be single and are cute. Married women, those in long term relationships and lesbians are another matter. Since I'm not risking a beutiful relationship with them.I can relax.

Anyone odd enough to fancy me buying them a drink should email me. I'm not completely sold on the concept of kids in the first place, but would have no objections to at least being in a position to say 'Thought about it and decided not to.'

I was a little surprised to get this as a question in the first place. Blame my mother, who popped out with it at a barbie a month or two back. When I was young I remember her telling me that in third world countries (which was what we called 'less developed nations' in those days) people felt that they should have big families to support them in their old age, but because we were in the civilised West we didn't have to do this. Now she's letting rip with 'Who's going to pay your pension?' There ain't no justice.

Where did you get the wallpaper?

It was drawn by a guy called Martyn Hill for Read Pheasant Throughout. Martyn also programmed GA's computers and was also bitter and twisted about the pay. A reading Pheasant see? Martyn went away from York to do an MSc in CAD or something like that and I don't know what happened to him. Probably earning packets in the south by now. If anyone knows drop me a line.

Two and a Half cats?

Two of my own, Pugwash and Jake and the cat from next door but one, who we call Jim.

Pugwash and Jim are brothers, though they look completely different. Pictures and recordings of their voices to follow. Jake is neurotic and alergic to fleas. While he runs like the clappers when someone new turns up he will re-appear if they sit down and don't do anything too abrupt, like trying to pick him up. Pugwash on the other hand just runs and hides out in the garden. I think he thinks he's a leopard. He's friendly inside, but like to pretend that he's a wild animal. He does a bad job of it.

Jim lives next door but one 'officially'. His owners have this funny idea about cats going out for the night. Jim on the other hand recognises that cats come in at night and so heads straight for my cat flap. He did this first in a thunderstorm as a kitten and since he was tiny and bedraggled we didn't throw him out, which meant that he kept coming. Since Jake and Pugwash are both pirate captains we called the kitten Jim, since that was a cabin boy sort of name. Since then he's grown very big and fat, bigger than Jake or Pugwash. We expect that he's got another name, but have no idea what it is, and have no intention of asking. He comes to have his tummy tickled when we call him Jim, so he can't mind it. The people next door but one give us very funny looks when we call him Jim.

What did you use to put these pages together?

I used a package called WebExpress produced by people at http://www.mvd.com/, which came on a PC Pro coverdisc. It's not bad, but when I look at the pages it produces using Netscape they're never quite the same, which makes getting the perfect setup difficult. Still I've never programmed html im my life and it's let me put this together remarkably fast.
